A pitbull may begin shivering before a familiar walking route is halfway complete.
That reaction does not mean every cold outing requires a thick coat, but it does warrant a closer look at temperature, wind, moisture, and the dog’s behavior. Pitbulls often have short coats with limited insulation compared with dogs bred for cold climates.
They can lose body heat while still appearing eager to walk. Clothing should therefore be treated as outdoor protection, not as a replacement for observation, gradual acclimation, or access to a warm, dry place. A shorter route may be the right adjustment on a particularly cold morning.
